Apple permanently closing three US stores, here’s why

Apple has confirmed its decision to permanently close three retail stores in the United States, specifically in Connecticut, Maryland, and California. This move comes as part of the company's ongoing evaluation of its retail locations in light of market conditions.

Details of the Store Closures

According to a statement from Apple, the following locations will be closed:

  • Apple Towson Town Center in Towson, Maryland
  • Apple North County in Escondido, California
  • Apple Trumbull in Trumbull, Connecticut

Apple attributed the closures to the departure of various retailers and the overall declining conditions at the shopping malls where these stores are located. The company stated, "At Apple, we are constantly striving to deliver exceptional service and great experiences for our customers. As we continue investing to expand and enhance our retail stores and offerings worldwide, we remain deliberate about evaluating our existing locations to ensure that we can meet our customers’ needs in the best way. Following the departure of several retailers and declining conditions at Trumbull Mall, the Shops at North County, and Towson Town Center, we’ve made the difficult decision to close our stores at these locations."

For context, Trumbull Mall has faced significant financial difficulties, including defaulting on over $150 million in loans, which have contributed to its struggles. Similarly, Towson Town Center has seen multiple business closures recently, including notable brands like Tommy Bahama and Banana Republic.

Closure Timeline and Employee Transition

All three Apple Stores are slated to close in June. Currently, these locations are marked as "temporarily closed" on Apple's website but are expected to reopen briefly before their permanent shutdown.

In terms of employee impact, Apple has assured that workers from the Trumbull and Escondido locations will have the opportunity to continue their roles at nearby Apple Retail stores. Employees from the Towson Town Center will be eligible to apply for other positions within the company, as per the collective bargaining agreement in place.

Apple stated, "Our team members at Trumbull and North County will continue their roles at nearby Apple Retail stores. Towson employees will be eligible to apply for open roles at Apple in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement. We look forward to continuing to serve customers at nearby stores and on Apple.com, the Apple Store app, and at Apple Authorized Resellers and Service Providers throughout the states." This transition is particularly significant as the Towson location was notable for being the first Apple Store in the United States to unionize in June 2022.

Union Response to the Closures

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) has expressed outrage over the decision to close the Towson store. A spokesperson for the IAM stated, "The IAM Union is outraged by Apple’s decision to close its Towson, Md., store—the first unionized Apple retail location in the United States—and abandon both its workers and a community that relies on it for critical services and its unique access to public transit. Apple’s claim that the collective bargaining agreement prevents relocation is simply false and raises serious concerns that this closure is a cynical attempt to bust the union. We are exploring all legal options and will work with elected officials and allies to hold Apple accountable."

Apple's Continued Investment in Retail

Despite the closure of these three locations, Apple continues to invest in its retail operations. Over the past year, the company has opened eleven new stores globally and has upgraded or replaced 14 other locations. In the U.S., Apple has opened two new stores and upgraded eight existing ones, demonstrating its commitment to enhancing its retail presence.

The closures of the three stores mark a significant shift in Apple's retail strategy, emphasizing the importance of location viability and customer experience in the ever-evolving retail landscape. Customers who frequently visited these stores are encouraged to share their thoughts and experiences regarding the closures.
