Gen Z uses AI all the time, so why are they starting to hate it?

Generational shifts often reflect changing attitudes towards technology, and the latest trends show that Gen Z, despite being avid users of generative AI, is increasingly skeptical about its impact on their lives. A new survey conducted by Gallup, in collaboration with the Walton Family Foundation and GSV Ventures, surveyed over 1,500 individuals aged 14 to 29, revealing a striking decline in enthusiasm for AI among this demographic.

Waning Excitement for AI

The survey results reveal a significant drop in positive sentiments towards AI. Excitement for AI has plummeted by 14 percentage points since last year, and hopefulness has decreased by nine points. In stark contrast, feelings of anger towards AI have risen by nine points. Currently, only 18% of Gen Z respondents express hope regarding AI, while merely 22% claim to find it exciting. Alarmingly, 42% report experiencing anxiety about AI, and 31% admit to feelings of outright anger.

Daily Users Are Not Immune

Even among daily users of AI who traditionally hold a more favorable view, the optimism is fading. Those who engage with AI tools every day have experienced a notable decline in excitement, with a drop of 18 points in enthusiasm and 11 points in hopefulness compared to last year. This trend suggests that greater exposure to AI does not necessarily lead to increased confidence in its capabilities.

Concerns About Learning and Creativity

A major source of frustration for Gen Z stems from concerns about how AI affects their cognitive abilities. The survey indicates that 80% of respondents believe using AI tools could hinder their future learning capabilities. Additionally, skepticism regarding the influence of AI on creativity and critical thinking is prevalent, with 38% and 42% respectively asserting that AI may cause more harm than good in these areas.

Workplace Trust Issues

The skepticism extends into the professional realm. Among employed Gen Z individuals, nearly half (48%) feel that the risks associated with AI outweigh its potential benefits. In stark contrast, only 15% view AI as a net positive in the workplace. Trust in AI-assisted work is notably low, with 69% of respondents stating they prefer work done without AI intervention.

Embracing AI with Caution

Despite their reservations, Gen Z is not completely dismissing AI technology. Approximately half of high school students believe that acquiring AI skills will be essential for their future careers. This indicates a nuanced understanding among Gen Z; they are willing to engage with AI technology but are proceeding with caution and critical awareness.

The Broader Implications

This shift in perspective among Gen Z raises significant questions about the future of AI integration in daily life and the workplace. As this generation matures, their attitudes toward technology may shape how AI is developed and implemented. Companies and developers may need to reconsider their approaches to AI, focusing on addressing the concerns of younger users and building trust in AI applications.

In conclusion, while Gen Z continues to use AI technologies regularly, their growing skepticism highlights the need for a more thoughtful dialogue about the implications of AI on learning, creativity, and professional integrity. The future of AI may depend not only on technological advancements but also on how effectively these concerns are addressed.
